Job Summary

Enforces local, state, and federal laws and conducts pro‐active patrols to ensure personal safety,
and real property and equipment security throughout the County. Serves as the first‐responder to
crime scenes and accidents, prepares reports, preserves evidence, and provides legal testimony as
required. 

Starting Wage Range: $27.55 - $28.83 per hour to start, based on experience - full time 
This position works an 84-hour per two-week pay period. 

NOTICE: In order to be considered for this position, applicants must currently be certified as a law enforcement officer in the State of Michigan or within 6 months of completing the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards requirements for certification.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Performs security patrols, traffic control, detection, investigation and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct.
  • Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates all types of incidents.
  • Investigates and renders assistance at scene of vehicular accidents. Summons ambulances and other law enforcement vehicles. Takes measurements and draws diagrams of scene. Interviews suspects, witnesses and drivers. Preserves evidence.
  • Conducts follow‐up investigations of crimes. Develops leads and tips. Carefully searches scenes of crimes for clues. Analyzes and evaluates evidence and arrests offenders. Prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings.
  • Prepares a variety of reports and records.
  • Undertakes community oriented road work, and assists citizens with such matters as motorist
    assists, crime prevention, drug education, traffic safety, etc.
  • Coordinates activities with other deputies or other County departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the County Prosecuting Attorney regarding policies and procedures.
  • Maintains contact with Law Enforcement supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation
    activities, provides mutual assistance during emergency situations and provides general
    information about Law Enforcement division activities.
  • Maintains departmental equipment, supplies and facilities and the accountability for same.
  • Serves as a member of various committees under the direction of the Sheriff.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of a two‐year college degree in correctional sciences, law enforcement, criminal justice administration, public administration, or closely related field is preferred.
  • Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Certified. 
  • Certified in the following: Firearms qualification, CPR, First Aid, Blood Borne Pathogens, LEIN certification, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Defensive Tactics, Unified Incident Command Training, Data Master, Radar, and Standard Field Sobriety Testing. 
  • Possess a Valid Michigan Driver's License. 

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Department's physical and physical fitness standards.
  • Must have the ability to pass a medical exam, drug screen and psychological evaluation.
  • Must be willing to submit to a thorough background investigation designed to assess the applicant’s suitability for employment as a Deputy Sheriff.
