The Crime Analyst is a specialized class performing a variety of data compilation, coding, analysis and manipulation to produce statistical summaries of such elements as incidents in specific geographic areas, types of offenses, incidents and offenses in participating agencies, specific Modus Operandi, pawn activities and similar information. The incumbent modifies databases to produce both periodic and special reports for both the Sheriff’s Office and for participating local cities.
Meets with investigative staff to determine areas of concern and situations, which need attention. Compiles statistics and prepares reports for each Marin County Sheriff’s Office geographic area and selected districts in targeted areas of crime on a periodic basis in order to increase the effectiveness of investigation, selective patrol, crime prevention and the apprehension of suspects. Compiles statistics for all cooperating law enforcement agencies in Marin County and publishes them on a biweekly basis in two formats: by agency and by offense.
Codes and logs crime reports and directs the performance of data entry by staff or volunteers. Designs and maintains automated database systems for the storage and retrieval of crime information. Designs individual screens to produce specialized information desired by department staff. Confers with representatives of other law enforcement agencies to exchange information and provide assistance and statistical data.
Prints periodic bulletins or newsletters to highlight specific activity or information in a format to be used by sworn personnel. Maintains the Department of Justice’s database for 290 PC registrants. Enters data or directly supervises a volunteer entering data into the state Criminal Justice Information System.
Prepares specialty reports in such areas as pawn activity. Researches specific requests for unique information from the Sheriff’s staff or from staff of any of the participating law enforcement agencies. Produces information for such special purposes as budget planning for investigation and for program evaluation.
Attends meetings and seminars related to the crime analysis function. Maintains accurate records and files. Selects and trains volunteers, planning and reviewing work as necessary. May testify in court as required.
